Colorado State University, also referred to as CSU, was established in Fort Collins, Colorado in 1870. CSU began as a college of agriculture when Colorado was still a United States Territory. Colorado State has had several titles. CSU started as the Colorado Agricultural College, but became the Colorado State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. The school nickname then was Colorado A & M. It became Colorado State University in 1957. CSU is one of sixty-eight land-grant colleges created under the federal Morrill Land-Grant Act. Under this act, each state in the United States would receive acreage grants of federal land. This land was to be used or sold by the colleges to fund each school. President Abraham Lincoln signed the Morrill Land-Grant Act into law in 1862. The first attempt to pass the act in 1859 was vetoed by President James Buchanan.
Colorado State University is a public college. It has an endowment over $190 million. CSU has a faculty staff of 1,400 instructors. There are 150-degree programs in 55 different departments. The college averages eighteen students to each teacher. In recent years, over 5,000 degrees have been awarded yearly. Four-fifths of these diplomas have been bachelor degrees with the remainder as doctorate degrees. Colorado State has nearly 300 student groups on campus. The college newspaper, known as the Rocky Mountain Collegian, is published daily. CSU has been designated as a Carnegie Class I research institution.
As Colorado A & M, the football team was known as the “Aggies.” An “A” was painted on a foothill above Fort Collins in recognition of the teams. The football team today is known as the “Rams.” Their sports mascot is Cam the Ram. Cam the Ram is the twenty-first mascot of the team. The Hughes Stadium is built below Horsetooth Reservoir. The stadium seats over 30,000 people. The Moby Sports Arena holds over 8,500 spectators. Moby Area is the home of the CSU Rams basketball teams. It is also a concert venue and the students at the Moby Arena are referred to as “Moby Maniacs.” School colors for CSU are a gold and green combination.
Colorado State University is less than an hour car drive south to Denver International Airport. Over three-fourths of the students attending are from the state of Colorado. There are over 20,000 students enrolled for classes. CSU has ten student residence halls. There are close to a 1,000 apartments available for family and older students. Colorado State University is the biggest employer in the city of Fort Collins. Fort Collins, Colorado is a city of 130,000 residents.
